World Cup 2018 groups: games, tables, current standings and analysis

POLAND

It's the first World Cup since 2006 for Poland, whose fans are likely to travel to Russia in large numbers. It could be the last chance to play on the biggest stage for strikers Robert Lewandowski and Jakub Blaszczykowski, who will be 29 and 32 respectively by the finals.

Poland are largely unchanged from the team that reached Euro 2016 quarter-finals where they lost on penalties to eventual champions Portugal. One concern in qualifying was a 4-0 thrashing by Denmark in September that raised concerns about the defence.

Key player: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) - Already Poland's record goalscorer, he scored a European-high 16 goals in qualifying.

Coach: Adam Nawalka - Turned Poland from a counter-attacking team into one which seeks to dominate possession.

SENEGAL

Senegal are back at the World Cup for the first time since their stunning debut in 2002, when they beat defending champions France on the way to the quarter-finals, then only the second African team to make the last eight.

This qualification has been contentious, with Senegal benefiting from an unprecedented decision by Fifa to order a replay of their 2-1 loss in South Africa because of match-fixing by the referee. Senegal took advantage to win the replay, changing the dynamic of the group.

Key player: Sadio Mane (Liverpool) - With his blistering pace, Mane has been every bit as effective for Senegal as he has for Liverpool.

Coach: Aliou Cisse - Senegal will take a reminder of their dream World Cup debut in 2002 to Russia next year. Cisse was captain of the 2002 team and returns to the World Cup as coach of his country.

World Cup 2018 groups: games, tables, current standings and analysis

COLOMBIA

Reached the quarter-finals four years ago in Brazil and they have the talent to do it again.

This will be Colombia's second straight appearance after sitting out for 16 years. Qualifying was a struggle this time. Colombia waited until the last match to make it to Russia.

Key player: James Rodriguez (Bayern Munich) - A breakthrough talent at the 2014 World Cup, exemplified by a stunning volley against Uruguay, Rodriguez quickly secured a move from Monaco to Real Madrid. After struggling to make an impact in Spain, Rodriguez is at Bayern Munich on loan trying to revive his form ahead of the World Cup.

Coach: Jose Pekerman - Gets much of the credit for getting Colombia back into the World Cup. Also led his native Argentina to the quarter-finals in the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

JAPAN

While the squad lacks the star power of many other World Cup teams, Japan can count on a group of reliable players with plenty of European experience. Shinji Kagawa of Borussia Dortmund and Shinji Okazaki of Leicester should play key roles.

Japan finished first in Group B in Asian qualifying, ahead of Saudi Arabia and Australia.

Key player: Shinji Kagawa (Borussia Dortmund) - With 92 caps, the midfield star is part of an experienced core of players also including Okazaki, defender Yuto Nagamoto and midfielder Keisuke Honda.

Coach: Vahid Halilhodzic - Japan hope the 66-year-old Bosnian can replicate his success with Algeria at the 2014 World Cup, when he took the North African nation into the last-16 for the first time.

Our prediction: Poland and Colombia to go through.

World Cup 2018: England vs Tunisia prediction

Tunisia vs England | World Cup 2018, Group G | Monday, June 18 | Volgograd Arena

England kick off their bid for World Cup glory with a Group G clash against Tunisia in Volgograd.

Gareth Southgate's Three Lions squad looks settled and in form for this summer's Russia finals, but the team must hit the ground running.

With Belgium among the tournament favourites and lying in wait in the final group game, England will need to get points on the board to ensure a smooth start to the tournament.

World Cup 2018: England vs Tunisia prediction

Our prediction - Belgium and England to go through

TUNISIA

Unbeaten during their qualifying campaign, Tunisia are making a return to the World Cup for the first time in 12 years.

The Eagles of Carthage qualified for Russia ahead of Democratic Republic of Congo, Libya and Guinea and will take part in their fifth World Cup. They have never got beyond the group stage.

With a new generation of players including Wahbi Khazri and former Monaco defender Aymen Abdennour, their main goal will be to win a game in Russia.

Key player: Youssef Msakni (Al Duhail) - The 27-year-old forward played a crucial role in qualifying, scoring a hat-trick in an away win to Guinea.

Coach: Nabil Maaloul - A former assistant under Roger Lemerre when Tunisia won the African Cup of Nations in 2002, Maaloul took over from Henri Kasperczak two matches into Tunisia's World Cup qualifying campaign.

World Cup 2018: England vs Tunisia prediction

ENGLAND

Expectations in England have plummeted because of the team's embarrassing performances in recent major tournaments - exiting the 2014 World Cup at the group stage and losing to Iceland in the round of 16 at Euro 2016.

Having the world's richest and most popular domestic league has had an adverse effect on the England team, whose managers have an increasingly shallow pool of top players to choose from.

A young squad will be taken to Russia, so getting out of the group is as much as can realistically be hoped for.

Key player: Harry Kane (Tottenham) - Emerged as one of the tops strikers in the world this year, scoring freely for his club in the Premier League and Champions League. Has 13 goals in 24 games for England.

Coach: Gareth Southgate - Sceptics are starting to come round to Southgate, who took charge in September 2016 despite having little top-level coaching experience but has shown he isn't afraid to make bold decisions.

World Cup 2018: Belgium vs Panama Lineups, Preview & Prediction

World Cup 2018: Belgium vs Panama Lineups, Preview & Prediction

Belgium will be without defenders Vincent Kompany and Thomas Vermaelen when they start their World Cup Group G campaign against Panama on Monday (4pm BST).

World Cup 2018: Belgium vs. Panama preview, players to watch, key stats.

World Cup 2018: Belgium vs Panama Lineups, Preview & Prediction

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Belgium : Eden Hazard

It was not the best of seasons for Hazard and Chelsea. There were flashes of brilliance but like Chelsea /  who surrendered its Premier League crown to Manchester City – Hazard was inconsistent. However, the Belgium star has the opportunity to regain his best form in the pursuit of glory in Russia.

Panama : Roman Torres

The hulking defender is the face of Panama and its captain. One of the region's most feared and experienced center-backs, Roman Torres — whose last-gasp goal saw Panama through to the World Cup — is a threat at set-pieces, while the Central Americans will be relying on the 32-year-old to stop Lukaku.

KEY OPTA FACTS

- This will be the first ever encounter between Belgium and Panama.

- Belgium is unbeaten in its last nine World Cup group games, winning each of its last four.

- Panama made it to the World Cup with a negative goal difference (minus one), winning only three of its 10 games in the final round of qualifying.

- Roberto Martinez is the first non-Belgian manager to lead the Red Devils at a major tournament since Scot Doug Livingston in 1954.

- Panama boss Hernan Dario Gomez is set for his third World Cup with a third different team, having led Colombia (1998) and Ecuador (2002) previously.

Belgium vs Panama Lineups, Preview & Prediction

World Cup 2018 groups: games, tables, current standings and analysis,
Group G - Belgium, Panama, Tunisia, England

BELGIUM

It's time to deliver for a team featuring such exceptional talent. But Belgium is a country that is yet to break into the semi-finals of a tournament.

It is widely acknowledged they have been held back by mediocre management. Now it is up to Roberto Martinez, a Spanish coach, to get the best out of this plethora of stars.

If you have Romelu Lukaku up front, Eden Hazard as a creative genius and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for a final lock on goal, the ingredients for success are there.

There are issues in defence. Central defender Vincent Kompany is as brittle as he can be brilliant and there are very few credible back-ups available for the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

Key player: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) - Overshadowed Eden Hazard at the 2014 World Cup, he has only grown in stature, especially since his move to City and his more withdrawn position on the pitch.

Coach: Roberto Martinez was a surprise pick for Belgium when they ditched Marc Wilmots after a disappointing Euro 2016. The Spaniard easily adapted to life in international management.

PANAMA

A first qualification for the World Cup earned Panama a national holiday.

The Central Americans made it to Russia in style, defeating Costa Rica 2-1 in the final qualifier.

Panama has only four million people, but finished ahead of the United States, which has about 320 million.

Key player: Luis Tejada (Universitario) - The striker has scored 43 goals for Panama.

Coach: Hernan Dario Gomez - The Colombian has worked his magic again. He got Colombia into the 1998 World Cup, and then did the same for Ecuador in 2002. Now it is Panama's turn.

Sweden and South Korea get their World Cup campaigns underway when they meet in Nizhny Novgorod on Monday.

The game could be crucial for both sides' chances of qualification as they also face holders Germany and Mexico in Group F.

However, neither side comes into the tournament in encouraging form.

World Cup 2018; Sweden vs South Korea, Lineups, Preview, Team News, Live Stream.

World Cup 2018 groups: games, tables, current standings and analysis

SWEDEN

Sweden had just stunned Italy in the play-offs to qualify for their first World Cup finals since 2006 when a tweet was posted by the country's best player: "We are Zweden."

The shadow of Zlatan Ibrahimovic hangs over the national team.

The Manchester United striker retired from international soccer after the 2016 European Championship and much of the build-up this time around was whether he might be lured back for one last World Cup.

Sweden seem more united and well-structured, but now they will find out just good they are without the force that made them tick for so long.

Key player: Emil Forsberg (Leipzig) - Has replaced Ibrahimovic as Sweden's inspiration in attack.

Coach: Janne Andersson - Took charge following Euro 2016 and has successfully rebuilt the team to be greater than the sum of its parts without Ibrahimovic.

SOUTH KOREA

Every World Cup since 1986 has featured South Korea. This time looks likelier to be a repeat of 2014's meek group-stage exit than 2002's swashbuckling run to the semi-finals.

Qualifying was tricky, with a place only secured thanks to a tense 0-0 draw against fellow qualifying contenders Uzbekistan on the final day of the Asian group stages, combined with Syria's failure to beat Iran.

Much will depend on a due of English Premier League players - Tottenham's Son Heung-min and Swansea's Ki Sung-yeung who bring valuable experience of top-level football.

Key player: Son Heung-min (Tottenham) - The top-scoring Asian player in Premier League history.

Coach: Shin Tae-yong - When defeats to Qatar and China threw South Korea's qualifying campaign into turmoil, the former Under-23 coach was promoted to steady the ship. Has only ever coached in South Korea and Australia.

Sweden, who are without the internationally-retired Zlatan Ibrahimovic, failed to score in their last three warm-up matches and have not won a game since beating Italy in the first leg of their play-off qualifier last November.

South Korea have had similar struggles over the last month - losing to Senegal and Bosnia and Herzegovina in friendlies.

However, while Sweden don't have Ibrahimovic, South Korea do have their talisman; Heung-Min Son.

The Tottenham forward scored 18 goals in all competitions last season and South Korea will be hoping he can deliver as they prepare for their ninth successive World Cup.

"I feel great when people say good things about me but what's important is that I have to show it on the pitch," said Son.

"I know lots of people's expectations are on me, so I also feel a responsibility."

South Korea only picked up a point at the last World Cup while Sweden made the last 16 in their last World Cup appearance in 2006.

The opening Group F game takes place on Sunday as Germany face Mexico.

World Cup 2018; Sweden vs South Korea, Lineups, Preview, Team News, Live Stream.

Opta stats

Sweden are unbeaten in their four previous games against South Korea (W2 D2). It's their first encounter at the World Cup.

Since finishing as runners-up on home soil in 1958, Sweden have progressed past the second round of the World Cup only once, it was in 1994 when they finished third.

Sweden are unbeaten in their last nine group games at the World Cup (W3 D6), with their last defeat in the first round of the competition dating back to 20 June 1990 (1-2 v Costa Rica). Sweden have kept only three clean sheets in their last 24 games at the World Cup.

Sweden have won none of their last seven opening games at the World Cup (D5 L2), their last victory dating back to 1958, on home soil (3-0 v Mexico). Meanwhile, South Korea are unbeaten in their last four openers (W3 D1).

South Korea have won only one of their last nine World Cup games (D3 L5) - it was in their opening match of the 2010 edition against Greece (2-0). That win is also their only clean sheet in their last 12 matches in the competition.

Five of South Korea's last eight goals at the World Cup have been scored from outside the box. Also, 12 of South Korea's last 13 goals in the competition have come after half-time.

World Cup 2018: Brazil vs Switzerland predicted line-ups and predictions

Brazil vs Switzerland match preview

The Brazilians cruised through qualifying by topping the CONMEBOL table recording huge wins over Argentina, Uruguay and Chile.

Tite’s side won all three of their international friendlies in the lead-up to the competition including a 1-0 win in Germany against the defending world champions.

World Cup 2018: Brazil vs Switzerland predicted line-ups and predictions

The five-time World Cup winners enter their 21st tournament ranked 2nd in the world and look a solid bet to go all the way in Russia.

Despite having booked their place in Russia going through the UEFA play-off spots, the Swiss enter the World Cup ranked 6th in the world.

In preparation for their 11th appearance at the finals, Switzerland recorded three wins in four whilst also managing to hold Spain to a 1-1 draw.

Manager Vladimir Petković will be looking to call upon plenty of the experience in his side with a number of his star men having played many games at the top level of European football throughout their careers.

BRAZIL

The gloom that engulfed Brazil after the 7-1 debacle against Germany in the 2014 World Cup has lifted.

Brazil were the first team to clinch qualification for Russia and had memorable wins on the way, including a 3-0 success over Argentina in the same Mineirao stadium of the 2014 semi-final humiliation.

It took the appointment of Tite in September 2016 to revive Brazil. Under his helm, there have been 13 wins, three draws and only one loss - in a friendly against Argentina.

Key player: Neymar (Paris St-Germain) - Should be at the peak of his game aged 26 in Russia, the forward will have his best chance to overthrow Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo if Brazil win.

Coach: Adenor Bacchi - Universally known as Tite, he turned Brazil from flops to favourites. Forget Dunga's muscular 2014 World Cup team that depended heavily on Neymar, Brazil are now about organisation and flair.

SWITZERLAND

Now is the time for Switzerland to be more than the sum of its talented parts. The quarter-finals are a realistic goal.

Don't call it a golden generation, but the Swiss have a core of players from the 2009 Under-17 world champion team and a depth of tournament experience.

However, those World Cup and European Championship adventures ended, at best, in the round of 16. Switzerland last won a World Cup knockout game in 1954, and that was just in a group play-off as host nation.

Critics can pick holes in how the Swiss qualified: Nine straight wins in a weak group, and a play-off against Northern Ireland decided by a dubious penalty call.

A well-balanced team has seemed to need a high-class central defender and reliable scorer. In Basel's Manuel Akanji, it might have found that defender.

Key player: Valon Behrami (Udinese) - Going to his fourth straight World Cup in the elder statesman role for a young squad, speaking all of Switzerland's three main languages. His absence weighed heavily in the group-deciding loss at Portugal.

Coach: Vladimir Petkovic - The unheralded Bosnian coach now seems to have grown into the role three years after succeeding two-time Champions League winner Ottmar Hitzfeld.

For three months, a whole nation feared it might not happen, but Neymar will take to the field with his Brazilian teammates when they kick off their World Cup campaign against Switzerland on Sunday. The world's most expensive player appears to have recovered fully from the fractured foot that required an operation in March, with the only slight concern being his possible lack of match fitness. Since suffering the injury in Paris Saint-Germain's game against Marseille in late February, Neymar has managed just 129 minutes on the field. But those minutes came in Brazil's recent warm-up friendlies, with a goal from the bench against Croatia and then a brilliant strike in a win in Austria last weekend. He will be in the starting line-up in Rostov-on-Don, for what will be his first game at a World Cup since being taken off with a fractured vertebra in Brazil's win against Colombia as hosts in the 2014 quarter-finals. And Neymar's importance in this new-look team - he is one of only six survivors from four years ago - is clear from the comments of his teammates in Sochi.

Germany has welcomed back Manuel Neuer from injury, with the Bayern Munich keeper playing his first competitive game for club and country in the 2-1 friendly defeat to Austria. Fresh from winning yet another Champions League title with Real Madrid, Toni Kroos is likely to start in the centre of midfield for Die Mannschaft against Mexico. 2018 FIFA World Cup: Germany Vs Mexico

GERMANY

The World Cup holders are in good shape to defend their title after going unbeaten in all games in 2017.

They have already collected a trophy in Russia in the build-up to the World Cup, winning the Confederations Cup in July and using the warm-up tournament to test new options like late developer Lars Stindl.

World Cup qualifying was completed with 10 wins from 10 and a European-record 43 goals.

Key player: Toni Kroos (Real Madrid) - Germany's new leader, Kroos keeps the side ticking from midfield, where his intelligence, precision and composition on the ball inspires team-mates going forward.

Coach: Joachim Low - Jurgen Klinsmann's assistant during the 2006 World Cup, Low took over after that tournament and has overseen steady progress culminating in the 2014 title.

MEXICO

Mexico have been regulars at the World Cup, but always come up just short. They have played in the last six World Cups, and were knocked out each time in the round of 16.

Reaching the quarter-finals this time would be seen as a success. The Mexicans have only done that twice - 1970 and 1986 when they were hosts.

Mexico impressed four years ago in Brazil, and they were impressive in qualifying this time, doing so with three games to spare ahead of Costa Rica and Panama. Arch rivals United States missed out this time. Few tears were shed in Mexico over this.

Key player: Javier Hernandez (West Ham) - Likely to line up in the front with Jesus Corona and Hirving Lozano.

Coach: Juan Carlos Osorio - Known for his detailed planning and quick attacking style, but struggles with self-control and was suspended for this summer's Gold Cup after being sent off at the Confederations Cup.

World Cup 2018: Argentina vs Iceland – Lineups, Preview & Prediction
Lionel Messi and co. look to put themselves in the best position possible to win Group C with a victory over a tough Iceland side.

The love story of the 2016 European Championships. The nation every neutral rooted for. The proud owners of the now famous ‘thunder clap,’ which is bound to make an appearance at the World Cup.

Drawn against Nigeria, Argentina and Croatia, there’s a tangible sense of mystery to Group C, with any one of the four nations in with a chance of topping the group.

Hoping to get their campaign off to the best possible start, the heroes of two years ago face Argentina, the nation ranked fifth in the world.

Iceland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson, however, won’t be fooled by FIFA’s rankings and will be consistently drilling the mantra of ‘every game is winnable’ into his players prior to kickoff on Saturday.

Argentina, themselves, ambled into the World Cup, needing a Lionel Messi hat-trick to send them to Russia and they’re far from the world beaters many expect them to be. With the pressure on Messi to deliver once more, Argentina a nation ripe for exploitation in other areas of the pitch.

Last Time Out
Argentina 4-0 Haiti [International Friendly]

La Albiceleste waved goodbye to their home fans in perfect style with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Haiti, courtesy of a hat trick from key man Lionel Messi.

Messi opened the scoring with a 17th minute penalty, before adding two more after the break at La Bombonera, Boca Juniors’ stadium in Buenos Aires.

The Barcelona forward also assisted Sergio Aguero for the fourth, who started the game on the bench after recovering from a slight knee injury.

The result, Messi said, allows Argentina to “go to Russia with hope,” and an outside chance of winning the World Cup.

Iceland 2-2 Ghana [International Friendly]

A late equaliser from Atletico Madrid central midfielder Thomas Partey saw Iceland head off to Russia on a disappointing note, after drawing against Ghana.

Iceland went two goals ahead in the first half -through Kari Arnason’s header from a corner and Alfred Finnbogason’s effort from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s parried effort-, but capitulated after the break and allowed Ghana a way back into the game.

Kasim Nuhu halved the deficit after 66 minutes, before Partey completed the comeback three minutes from time, dealing a blow to Hallgrimsson’s preparations.

Argentina Lineup

Enzo Perez was called up to replace the injured Manuel Lanzini, whilst Ever Banega has been training apart from the rest of the squad, which means he’s expected to miss the opener against Iceland.

The two areas of uncertainty are in defence, with debate between Marcos Rojo and Federico Fazio at centre back, as well Gabriel Mercado and Eduardo Salvio at right back.

Jorge Sampaoli has been tactically inconsistent, opting to experiment with a 4-2-3-1, 4-3-2-1 and variations of three-man defences. However, he’s expected to deploy a tried and tested 4-2-3-1 to avoid risk.

Argentina have an array of attacking talent, which means the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Paulo Dybala and Boca Juniors star Cristian Pavon confined to roles from the bench. The same goes for Giovani Lo Celso, with Javier Mascherano and Lucas Biglia preferred.

Iceland Lineup

Manager Hallgrimsson will stick with the 4-4-2 that has proven so effective in the past, relying on organisation, defensive nous and counter-attacking football to put the sword to a weak-looking Argentine back four.

Gylfi Sigurdsson was back in action in Iceland’s pre-World Cup friendlies, with the Everton playmaker expected to partner Augsburg’s Alfred Finnbogason up front.

Key Battle: Javier Mascherano (Argentina) vs Gylfi Sigurdsson (Iceland)
Everton forward Gylfi Sigurdsson didn’t have the best of seasons following his £40 million move from Swansea City, scoring four goals and assisting three whilst spending some time on the sidelines.

Spending March, April and May out injured, Sigurdsson only recently returned to Iceland’s starting XI, but made his presence known with a goal on his return against Norway at the beginning of the month. Nonetheless, he’s a vital figure for the national side.

Hallgrimsson uses a 4-4-2 formation with Sigurdsson played up front, but the onus is on the playmaker to drop between the lines and get on the ball frequently to create chances and exert his influence on the game.

In doing so, he should target Javier Mascherano. Now 34, the Argentine made just seven La Liga appearances for Barcelona with his best years now behind him. Sampaoli still persists with him over Giovani Lo Celso in the middle, and Sigurdsson should target the midfielder and look to take advantage of his lack of legs and, thus, mobility.

If Sigurdsson gets in behind an ageing Mascherano, he’s faced with a notably weak defence there for the taking.

Talking Points
A different way of attacking

Iceland aren’t a nation stocked with an endless supply of talent, but they do fairly well given their size, producing players such as Gylfi Sigurdsson, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Alfred Finnbogason. Naturally, Sigurdsson is the key and his teammates will frequently look to get the ball to his feet, but there are other means of attacking.

Particularly against Argentina, Hallgrimsson should be smart and look to exploit their right flank. Defence is a commonly accepted weakness for a top-heavy Argentina side, but within that, right back is specifically poor.

In Gudmundsson, one of Burnley’s star players as they finished seventh in the Premier League, Iceland have a fantastic early crosser of the ball, a winger that made 1.8 crosses and 1.9 key passes per game, as well as assisting eight goals.

Moreover, Gudmundsson is used to playing as a defensive winger in Burnley’s 4-4-2, one accustomed to early crossing.

Couple that with Finnbogason -who netted 12 goals in the Bundesliga and won 0.8 aerial duels per game- and this is a recipe for offensive success.

It’s going to get Messi

Whilst Iceland are typically a sturdy side with a strong defensive foundation, shown by their record of conceding seven goals in ten qualification games, there wasn’t a player even close to Messi’s calibre in their group.

Sampaoli relies on the Barcelona forward for a reason; he’s phenomenal.

Despite a wealth of attacking talent, Gonzalo Higuain tends to go missing in higher profile games and a majority of the goal scoring burden tends to fall on Messi’s shoulders, as he’s expected to carry them through games. Such was the case in their qualification playoff, in which Messi scored a hat-trick.

There isn’t a standout name in the Icelandic defence, moreover, and they’re going to struggle to keep Messi at bay. He’s unpredictable and plays with freedom for the national team, often starting wide and drifting inside or vice versa.

Where he pops up is anyone’s guess.

Prediction: Argentina 3-1 Iceland
Iceland have grown into a solid international side since their Euro 2016 heroics and won’t simply roll over for the Argentines.

Don’t expect the game of the century, rather a cagey affair, with Iceland looking to attack through Gudmundsson, Sigurdsson and Finnbogason and keep a poor defence on their toes.

Iceland have the capacity to hold Argentina and a draw is certainly feasible, though Sampaoli has the Messi effect in his locker and, well, anything’s possible with one of the greatest ever.

Messi to do what he does and ensure an opening game victory.

France vs Australia: Team News, Live Stream, TV Info for World Cup 2018

France received one of the kinder group-stage draws at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and will get their campaign up and running against Australia at the Kazan Arena on Saturday.

Les Bleus are the leading contenders to top Group C ahead of Peru, Denmark and the Socceroos, the latter of whom will be widely expected to finish at the bottom of the pile.

It's an inviting opportunity for Didier Deschamps' men as they get under way in Kazan, Russia, with the 1998 champions looking to improve on their quarter-final exit at the hands of Germany in 2014.

Australia sit 36th in the FIFA rankings, 29 spots below seventh-place France, while Peru and Denmark are far closer to the rest of the pack in 11th and 12th, respectively.

Nevertheless, the men from Down Under will hope a surprise result can cause a shock on the third day of the tournament, and we provide a preview of Saturday's clash along with all the latest team news.

Team News

France have the only notable injury concerns heading into Saturday's clash, but they have received some positive news in recent days.

BBC Sport confirmed right-back Djibril Sidibe is still struggling with a knee injury and should be replaced by Benjamin Pavard, and injury analyst Ben Dinnery reported Kylian Mbappe is ready for selection:

Mbappe had worried fans when he crumpled under a challenge from Adil Rami in training earlier in the week, although it appears he's made a full recovery.

Ligue 1 Show presenter Matt Spiro provided a rundown of the team he expects to line up against the Socceroos:

Australia manager Bert van Marwijk has no major worries ahead of Saturday's opening game.

Preview

France will face up to a lot of questions when they get their World Cup under way on Saturday, with Deschamps assembling a squad that has earned its place among the front-runners but is lacking in experience.

In fact, Les Bleus bring the second-youngest selection to Russia and will be looking to prove the old football adage "you can't win anything with kids" wrong, per The Independent:

However, these are some of the most talented kids on the block, bringing with them stars who have had success in Europe's top divisions, as well as UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League winners.

Australia are far less notable in terms of accomplishments, and the lack of recognised striker options was a particular cause for concern, according to Tifo Football:

But the World Cup has a habit of coaxing the best out of players not only physically but also on a mental plane, and manager Van Marwijk spoke to the NOS (h/t Football-Oranje.com) about his side's need to be brave:

"A lot of the young players I have in my squad play in the English Championship, the second division in England and I believe that is also the current level of our team. That is why we have the challenge to mould a real team together who all know what they must do on the pitch.

"We need to show guts against France and we need a bit of luck too.

"While I have been working with my players every day, you can see that they are willing to fight for one another and they will need to do that against France."

The Socceroos are likely to find their best chances come from set-piece opportunities, given that France have lost just once in their last 12 games, albeit only managing one clean sheet in their last six.

Tournament football can be a difficult art to master, particularly for those who are lacking in international nous, although even a young France squad should be hopeful of sailing its way to victory in Kazan on Saturday.

World Cup 2018: Portugal vs Spain 2018 World Cup Prediction

Portugal vs Spain 2018 World Cup Prediciton

World cup predictions 2018, In terms of glamour, no group stage game comes close to matching Portugal vs Spain on June 15 at Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi. This is, after all, a meeting between the last three European Champions (Spain in ’08 and ’12, Portugal in ’16), and a clash between arguably the world’s best player, Cristiano Ronaldo, and a who’s who of talent concentrated at the mega clubs of the world’s two best domestic leagues.

Football world cup 2018 predictions, On paper, this is some Charles Bukowski shit. We’ve got the preternatural savagery of eternal footballers like Ronaldo and Andres Iniesta. We’ve got the melodic genius of poets like Isco and Bernardo Silva. We’ve got the wily, red-card-waiting-to-happen madness of crunch masters Sergio Ramos and Pepe.

World cup 2018, Ultimately, we’ve got what could've amounted to a pretty great World Cup final coming on Day 2 in Russia. Mix in a bit of the antagonism that’s present in any border battle and you can bet on your daughter’s life that this Iberian Derby is going to make for one helluva spectacle.

But who’s the favorite here?

Well, given that you’ll get about 6:1 odds on Spain winning it all versus 25:1 for Portugal, the answer is pretty obvious. What’s more, defeat for either nation won’t be catastrophic — it’s 42nd ranked Morocco and 36th ranked Iran contesting the other Group B match on the day.

World cup predictions, Having said that, you never want to lose your opening match (please Venmo me for this incredible insight). But seriously, dating back to the 1998 World Cup, 60 nations have lost their opening game. Only seven have advanced to the Round of 16. There’s no margin for error in this thing. Both Spain (defeated by Holland) and Portugal (defeated by Germany) learned that in 2014.

World cup predictions 2018,  Portugal cannot afford the same start they experienced at Euro 2016, when they drew all three of their group games. In a traditional European Championship, they would’ve gone home. But in the expanded format, they were allowed to continue as the third-best third-placed team.

And so while they’ll rightfully enter the World Cup with the European Championship belt, it won’t be without the aforementioned caveat. Nor the fact that while Spain, Germany, Italy and France had to contest one side of the knockout bracket, Portugal got to ride the wave of Croatia, Poland and Wales on the road to the final.

Unbeaten in 18 matches and with incredible recent displays against Italy (3-0) and Argentina (6-1), Spain’s frightening mix of the old guard with the new makes them the obvious favorites here.
